Remember back in the day when the NHL had some classic fights? You had players such as Dave “The Hammer” Shultz, Dave “Tiger” Williams, Terry O’Reilly and our featured NHL fighter Bob Probert. During the highlight of his career in the 80’s and 90’s he was known by some in the league as the ‘League Heavyweight Champion’. Originally drafted in the 1983 NHL draft by the Detroit Red Wings who in that same draft also took Steve Yzerman and Joe Kocur, Bob Probert wasn’t needed to be counted on to rack up points, instead he was known to rough up opposing team players so that his team got a physiological advantage. Although Probert was a fan favorite with his physical play on the ice, it was his off ice problems that got him in trouble with management. In 1989 he was arrested for cocaine possession and in 1994 he was in a motorcycle crash, shortly thereafter the Red Wings decided to let him become a free agent.

When he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks he only had one season where he achieved 40 points, but his physical play on the ice kept him a team and fan favorite. Interesting enough was that Probert was the last NHL player to score a goal in the historic Maple Leafs Garden in 1999. The time has passed for the NHL trade deadline and we had some very big trades and some of them come as quite a surprise to me. Perhaps the biggest trade was Marian Hossa going to the Pittsburgh Penguins; I can’t imagine the offensive firepower this team will now have. Pittsburgh, really made themselves a team that could challenge for the Eastern Conference Finals, and if Sidney Crosby is 100% throughout the whole playoffs we just might be seeing them play until June. The Dallas Stars really upgraded by adding Brad Richards who is a solid player and if you remember he had a huge Stanley Cup Finals with Tampa, Dallas is hoping he can do the same for them this year.

The deals that just don’t make that much sense to me are Colorado adding Peter Forsberg and Adam Foote, this seems to remind me of what the Philadelphia Flyers did in the 1990’s by adding players who were great, but were added a year or two past their prime. Colorado is really banking on how they played a few years ago, and hope that translates to playoff success. It surely was an interesting day with big name trades and some smaller trades that were sending players for draft picks so that they got out of contracts; it will be a very interesting month ahead to see how the whole playoff format shapes up. Will Pittsburgh and Dallas still be playing late in the spring? No one knows for sure, but I think some of these moves have guaranteed us an exciting upcoming NHL playoffs.

The Peter Forsberg deal has finally been completed after a will he or won’t he come back and the Colorado Avalanche seem to be happy with this one year deal, will this help them get into the playoffs? In other trade news, the Philadelphia Flyers added Vaclav Prospal from the Tampa Bay Lightning for minor league defenseman Alexandre Picard and a conditional draft pick. As other big trades happen, we will continue to update our site so you can stay informed as to what’s happening around the NHL.

Other news regarding players signing deals with their current teams include the Tampa Bay Lightning re-signed defenseman Dan Boyle to a six-year contract extension. We have also learned that Mike Comrie has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the New York Islanders.

Will Peter Forsberg be the key to the Colorado Avalanche’s playoff hopes that lead to a Stanley Cup championship? Forsberg signed a one-year deal with the Avalanche even though just a week ago it seemed like his career was over when it was announced he would not be playing in the NHL for the remainder of the 2008 season. Colorado is currently 10^th in the Western Conference and they are banking on having Forsberg’s touch to lead them to the playoffs and beyond just as he did in 1996 and 2001 when he helped them win the Stanley Cup.

It was a very memorable night in Montreal as the Canadien’s retired Bob Gainey’s number 23 this past Saturday night. The ceremony was a first class effort and the grand entrance had a little twist to it, as Gainey’s name as announced everyone expected for him to come through the tunnel but Gainey surprised everyone by being driven out on the ice by the Zamboni. The fans gave him a standing ovation for about five minutes and with his children Anna, Steve and Colleen, his big sister Maureen, close family friend Christine Pickrell, and of course the dozen or so teammates from the 1986 Canadiens by his side, Gainey continued to shower his adopted Quebec home with praise.

Bob Gainey’s career with the Montreal Canadiens was indeed a storied one as he won five Stanley Cups and he won four consecutive Frank J. Selke awards for being the league’s best defensive forward. After his playing career he went to France to become a coach only to return to the NHL a year later to be named the coach for the Minnesota North Stars and finally ended his North Stars legacy to be the GM where he built a powerful team that ended up winning the Stanley Cup in 1999. Currently he is the GM for his beloved Montreal Canadiens, the team he spent his entire playing career with.
